Video Highlights of Media Briefing on Supreme Court Case Involving Chicago Handgun Law
Legal Community Against Violence, a leading gun violence prevention group, hosted Chicago Mayor Richard M. Daley and other stakeholders at a briefing at the National Press Club in Washington, DC. The briefing was held in advance of oral arguments before the Supreme Court in McDonald v. Chicago, a case challenging the City of Chicago handgun ban.
The case raises the question of whether the Second Amendment provides a basis to challenge state and local gun laws. In 2008, in District of Columbia v. Heller, the Court held the Second Amendment protects the right of individuals to possess a firearm in the home for self defense. Because the decision involved a handgun ban in Washington, DC, the Court did not address whether the Second Amendment also limits the authority of state governments and municipalities.
The Court's decision will have profound implications for state and local governments and their ability to implement public safety laws that best suit their own communities.
